Abstract
Meteorological characteristics of hilly apple orchards located in Sangri- (321?405 m elevation) and Harimyeon (135?224 m elevation), Yecheon-gun, Gyeongbuk, Korea were examined. Mean air temperature was maintained lower in higher altitude orchards (405 m elevation) from August to September 10, but this tendency became ambiguous due to pronounced fluctuation thereafter. Higher altitude orchards showed lower maximum air temperature from August to late October, while minimum air temperature was higher after mid August, indicating the formation of the thermal belt. Altitude of orchard was curvilinearly correlated with fruit skin anthocyanin content, Hunter a* value, and fruit shape index. These results suggest that hilly apple orchards located at higher elevation have more chances for production of quality fruits with higher Hunter a* value.
